Lake Naivasha Country Club became famous in the 1930’s as a staging post for Imperial Airways’ flying boat service from Durban to London. The old Colonial architecture is solid and comfortable with accommodation in rooms and cottages set in 12 hectares of green lawns shaded by mature acacias.
Lake Naivasha is a focus of activity. There’s good fishing for black bass and tilapia and a boat trip during the day is recommended for a close up of Naivasha’s remarkable variety of bird life and its hippo colonies. The club offers entertainment such as, traditional dances, live bands, indoor and outdoor games and water sports.
A visit to Crescent Island should not be missed. It is one of the few places in all Africa where you can wander on foot among herds of Zebra, Wildebeest, Gazelle and Giraffe. There are no fences and no predators. It is completely wild and undeveloped and preserved like a private game park. From here the views of the Mau Escarpment and Mount Longonot are never to be forgotten.
A half day in Hells Gate National Park is another must. If you are fit you can hike or ride a bike. The setting is one of intense, recent volcanic activity where hot springs, stream jets and fumaroles are common. Full of gorges, cliffs, caves and towers, Hell’s Gate is famous for its birds of prey and its unique flora which thrive on volcanic soil.
Naivasha is one of the world’s outstanding birding places with over 300 species on display. Three bird walks a day are offered in the grounds of the Country Club, each walk quite different in location, time of day and species seen.
