Kenyan Athletes

Kenya Athletics doing what they do best

Although athletics is the well known sport, Kenyans practice other sports which include golf, football, hiking and to mention but a few.

Athletics

Perhaps more than anything else, Kenya is renowned all over the world for its superb track and field athletes. Since the 1960s, Kenya has produced more world class athletes, more world record holders and more Olympic Medalists in long distance running than any other country.

Kenyan women, who for years were unable to match the men, have come up strong and are now a force to recon with especially now that they have quite a number of wins in winning marathons and road races all over the world.

In March 2007, the 35th IAAF World Cross Country Championships took place in Mombasa, Kenya was a great success. Kenya won most of the medals, the IAAF board was impressed on how the event was organised and executed.

Football

Football is played by both girls and boys of all ages, it a common thing to see children playing with home made soccer balls. Football in Kenya is still growing and the national team has participated in several international matches.

Golf

golf

Golf was for a long time considered a sport for the economic elite. This has changed with more and more people from the middle and lower income level citizens taking on golfing as a recreational activity sport. Some private schools are offering golf as a part of their academic program.

There are several well maintained courses in Nairobi and its environs.

Hiking

Kenya has mountains and rugged terrains and due to these the country is good for hiking. Hikers are advised to be careful and should have a guide with them at all times.

The best places to go hiking are the Aberdare Mountains, the Chyulu Hills, Hell's Gate, Mt. Susua, Mt. Longonot, Menengai Crater in the Rift Valley, Ngong Hills, and located south-west of Nairobi, Cherangani Hill, Mt. Elgon and Mt Kenya.

The Safari Rally is considered to be the worlds toughest rally. It was first held from May 27 to June 1, 1953 as the East African Coronation Safari in Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika, as a celebration of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. In 1960 it was renamed the East African Safari Rally and kept that name until 1974, when it became the Safari Rally.

The event was part of the World Rally Championship calendar for many years until being excluded due to lack of funding & organization in 2003. The Kenyan government is working on getting the rally's WRC status restored. Since 2003 the event has been part of the African Rally Championship organized by the FIA.

It is currently known as the KCB Safari Rally after its sponsor, Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB). Local driver Shekhar Mehta was the most successful in the event with five outright victories (1973, 1979-1982).

Cricket

Cricket was brought to Kenya by colonial settlers and was first played in Mombasa from where it spread inland.

The first match of any consequence took place in 1899, and in 1910 a three-day fixture between Officials and Settlers started, remaining the highlight of the domestic calendar until 1964, along with Europeans v Asians which began in 1933.

The first international game took place in 1951 when Kenya played Tanganyika (captained by C. de L. Innis, the West Indian representative) and in 1952 a Natal team visited, Russell Endean scoring a century.

In 1953 the Kenyan Cricket Association was formed, the colony's first inter-racial organisation, although largely dominated by the Asian community.

Nairobi hosted the 2000 Champions Trophy, and in 2003 Kenya co-hosted the World Cup, overturning the form book by reaching the semi-finals. But in their finest hour, things were already on the slide.

In early 2007, Kenya hosted and won the Division One of the ICC World Cricket League where they took on Bermuda, Canada, Ireland, The Netherlands and Scotland. This was be preceded by an ODI tri-series against Canada and Scotland.
